Apple pie is best served with a slice of sharp cheddar - it's super traditional in New England, or at least Vermont.
To clear up a common misconception, the cheese isn't melted on top or anything like that. The sharpness of the cheddar mixes well with the apples when more tart varieties are used. It can also balance out the sweetness of the pie when sweeter apples are used. It's just one of those awesome combinations...kind of like sweet and salty.

In the '70s TV show "Soap" the character named Chester Tate loses his memory. He is in a diner, when he hears a waitress yell to the cook, "Apple pie with cheddar on the plate!" Chester Tate then remembers his name.

I've heard of it, but I don't understand the point of ruining two ultra-delicious foods by combining them.

Sometimes two rights don't make a...err..right.

Apple pie with cheese on top? That's just nonsense! I've never heard of it. By the way, just had lunch there today for the first time, it was very good. I heard people talking about it in the elevator and decided to give it a try. Glad i did.
