In recent years McDonald’s has gotten a pretty bad rap. Some of that reputation is justified, but most of it is, in my opinion, a load of hooey. I’d like to take a moment to applaud McDonald’s for the things they do well, because as someone in food I know what they do isn’t easy.
So, here’s the thing. Last Friday I was sitting in an airport in the middle of a two-hour flight delay. I arrived at the airport straight from work, with only the chance to have eaten a bowl of soup all day. As the clock moved past 9 I decided it was in my best interest to find something to eat. I headed down a corridor toward a central hub where I found a fairly long line of people waiting to order something from McDonald’s. All around those potential customers other food kiosks stood dark because they were closed.
Don’t get me wrong, McDonald’s is in the business of making money, but they didn’t have to be open. Presumably those other food places weren’t open because it wasn’t woth their time to be open. McDonald’s was there for me. They were fast, they were very friendly, they filled me up for less than $6 in an airport. Those are all things to be valued. On top of that, their food was delicious.
In conclusion, blame moderation, not McDonald’s.
